Organizations have only three assets to make their dreams come true; plant and equipment, capital and people. I think you will agree when I say that it is the people that are the most important since they control the other two. These people who work together day to day form the culture.
All organizations have a culture and usually the culture is one by default. Rarely does management step back and create this most important asset by design and that is the business I’m in. I facilitate a process that brings about agreement, agreement within the culture to a set of values that are shared.
You see you can’t change people; you can’t make them be the way you want them to be. You can’t change your spouse, your kids or your mother-in-law let alone your employees. But behavior can change through the power of context. Research shows that only 26% of workers are engaged in their job. The rest of the 74% are either disengaged or actively disengaged. They weren’t hired that way; the culture changed their attitude. Still, people want to be great, they want to contribute. By creating a shared values work environment people engage. They volunteer their hearts and volunteer their minds, the only durable competitive advantage. Creating a shared values work place does take time but it is not as difficult as you might think. You see, there is power in agreement. |
